Methodology

PlainWorker aggregates workplace enforcement records from two official U.S. Department of Labor sources: OSHA inspection and violation data (covering workplace safety citations) and the Wage and Hour Division (WHD) enforcement database (covering Fair Labor Standards Act violations including minimum wage, overtime, and back-wages findings). Records are refreshed monthly from data.dol.gov.

An employer is included if they have 2 or more OSHA inspections on record or $1,000 or more in WHD back wages owed. Penalty amounts reflect current adjudicated values after any informal conference, settlement, or formal contest, not the initial assessed amounts. NAICS industry classifications follow the U.S. Census Bureau's most recent sector definitions. Records are matched across OSHA and WHD datasets by employer name, state, and city; where address differs between datasets, we retain the OSHA record as primary.
