Frequently Asked Questions

How is the industry violation rate calculated?
The violation rate is computed as total OSHA violations divided by total OSHA inspections for all employers in that NAICS sector. A rate of 2.27 means on average 2.27 violations are found per inspection. Higher rates indicate more violations are discovered when OSHA inspects workplaces in that industry.
What is the difference between serious, willful, and repeat violations?
Serious violations involve hazards that could cause death or serious physical harm. Willful violations are committed with intentional disregard for the law or plain indifference to employee safety. Repeat violations are for hazards substantially similar to a previously cited violation. Willful and repeat violations carry significantly higher penalties.
